About us in Animalia

Animalia is Norway's leading knowledge and development centre for meat and egg production.

Animalia is a neutral industry body and the meat and egg industry's own centre for knowledge and expertise. We serve Norwegian farmers and the entire industry through livestock recording systems and animal health services, mission-critical technical systems, research and development projects, courses and training, and knowledge dissemination.

We contribute to increased value creation, reduced costs and high trust in Norwegian meat and egg production. Through knowledge-based, valuable and cost-effective services, we strengthen the long-term competitiveness of farmers and the industry.

The core of Animalia AS's operations is industry-neutral work, funded by a sales tax on meat and eggs. In addition, there are project and contract revenues.

On January 1, 2018, Animalia's operations were separated from Nortura SA into a separate limited company.

Our Areas of Expertise #

Animalia's particular strength lies in our knowledge of, and practical experience with, the entire value chain in Norwegian meat and egg production. This value chain expertise is also essential to Animalia's work within each individual core area. Our core areas cover activities from farm to fork.

  • Livestock Production

Norwegian livestock production must be efficient and well documented. The goal is to ensure access to the necessary livestock expertise and reliable data as the basis for production management, food chain information, breeding and research. Animalia develops and operates the livestock recording systems, and also contributes through documentation, the further development of data tools, training, participation in research and development projects, and professional advice to primary producers.

  • Animal Health and Welfare

Good animal health is an important competitive advantage for Norwegian livestock production. Maintaining and improving animal health is a key objective. Animalia contributes through information services, training and professional advice, both preventively and in the event of disease outbreaks, through the health services for poultry, sheep, goats, cattle and pigs, and through KOORIMP (the Norwegian Livestock Industry's Biosecurity Unit). We also participate in research and development projects.

Improving animal welfare in Norwegian livestock production is an objective for the meat and egg industry. Animalia aims to be a central player in this work by acting as a driving force for both the authorities and the industry. Attitude-shaping activities, training measures, research, animal welfare programmes and other initiatives are intended to improve the welfare of production animals throughout their entire lifecycle, from birth to slaughter.

  • Food Safety

Norwegian meat and egg products must be safe, and the industry must enjoy a high level of trust among the public. The goal is to maintain safe production and to develop cost-effective solutions to meet new challenges in this area. Animalia participates in research and development projects and takes a proactive role by drawing up industry guidelines, documentation and training programmes, as well as carrying out individual assignments across the entire value chain.

  • Raw Materials and Processing

Competitive Norwegian meat and egg production depends on process and product development and on tailored management and control systems. The goal is to increase value creation in the meat and egg industry through accurate carcass grading, improved processes and greater raw material expertise. Animalia is responsible for maintaining and developing the Norwegian carcass grading system, and also acts as a driving force for the industry by providing training and professional advice in slaughtering, cutting, and process and product development, and by participating in research and development projects.

  • Meat and Eggs in the Norwegian Diet

Dietary advice relating to meat and eggs must be based on up-to-date knowledge that is relevant to Norwegian conditions. The goal is for meat and eggs to remain a natural part of a healthy Norwegian diet. Animalia works with the industry's nutrition experts to initiate and coordinate research and development in nutrition, diet and health, and to carry out knowledge dissemination and network building, particularly with the health authorities.

  • Climate, Environment and Food Security

For Norwegian meat and egg producers, the goal is to operate in a way that takes account of sustainability, the environment and the climate. Knowledge is essential to achieving this. The challenge is to produce more food from Norwegian resources with the least possible impact on the environment. Animalia aims to be a driving force in the industry, to build networks both nationally and internationally, to initiate research that is relevant to Norwegian conditions, and to disseminate knowledge, both within the industry and to the public at large.

Financing and Key Indicators #

Animalia's main funding for professional activities comes from the sales levy. This levy is regulated by law and is paid by farmers as a charge per kilo at slaughter and on the first sale of eggs.

The Norwegian Agricultural Agreement Board (Omsetningsrådet) administers the sales levy funds. The Board approves Animalia's strategy and action plan, as well as its budget and accounts.

In addition to the sales levy funds, Animalia has revenues from the sale of services and products, and applies for funding for research and development projects from public project financing sources such as the Research Council of Norway, research funds under the Agricultural Agreement, the Fund for Research Levy on Agricultural Products, Innovation Norway and EU funding.

A total of NOK 77.4 million in sales levy funds was spent on the development and operation of joint industry activities in 2025. Other revenues from projects, assignments and services amounted to NOK 76.4 million.
